When Hate Goes Mainstream, Artists Must go to War
A new substack journey about the rise of hate begins.
We have launched our brand new Substack called A COW IN THE SKY, inspired by our award-winning short film of the same name and our desire to dig deeper into the connection between the true story it is based on and the rise of hate and authoritarianism in America today. It is a journey that will include publicly releasing the short for the first time and exploring the real life history of the story behind it. Furthermore, this Substack dives into the forces shaping our most pressing realities - hate, extremism, social injustice, and creeping authoritarianism - through the lens of storytelling. We will examine not just what’s happening, but how we got here, and how art can bear witness, disrupt narratives, preserve memory, ignite resistance, and reimagine the future.

After a screening of A Cow in the Sky at Tribeca Festival, a man came up to us with his teenage daughter. He waited for the crowd to thin before saying:
“Thank you. For telling this story. You made me cry and still feel hope.” Then almost as an afterthought he whispered, “when the boy took off, my daughter leaned over and held my hand.”
We have a teenage daughter. We fully understand the significance of that moment. Seriously - thank you, sir. Maybe we can bottle that for when our daughter slams her bedroom door because we suggested dinner.
And then at every screening since, people have come up to us, people of all ages and backgrounds, to tell us they were moved…
